Our story

T he Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation – National Centre was first opened for classes on 11 September 1989, in a rented bungalow at Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, with the primary aim of educating and young children (below 7 years old) with Down Syndrome.

Originally known as Kiwanis Down Syndrome Centre (KDSC), it was started by the Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur (KCKL) in response to a "Challenge” to undertake a long to community service project.

In 1991, a second Kiwanis Down Syndrome Centre was set up in Johor Bahru (by the Kiwanis Club of Johor Bahru) with association to the KDSF. As a result, the Johor Bahru Centre became known as the KDSF-JB Centre, whilst the Centre in Petaling Jaya became known as the KDSF-PJ Centre.

Subsequently, the 3rd 4th 5th and 6th Contres were started in Klang (1994). Seremban (1996), Melaka (1990) and Kota Kinabalu (2002) by the respective Kiwanis Clubs, all with association to the KDSF.

In March 2004, the KDSF-PJ Centre moved into its own newly constructed Building, and changed its name to KDSF-National Centre.

Since its establishment in 1989, KDSF has provided early intervention education for over 2000 children with Down Syndrome. The education programme of KDSF has helped in the developmental skills during the critical early years of these children with Down Syndrome which in the longer term maximises the potential of the children and very importantly improves the fundamentals for growth and lifelong development. What started as only a basic early intervention programme, their service has expanded to include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, as well as advanced-type therapies such as Sensory Integration Intervention, Rhythmic Movement Training, Water Specific Therapy, etc.
